Spatialise’s Mapping Our Recyclable Elements in partnership with EXTR:ACT supports more effective circularity of multi-material packaging for all of Europe.  EXTR:ACT is a platform set up by ACE members BillerudKorsnäs, Elopak, SIG Combibloc, Stora Enso and Tetra Pak with a mission to foster recycling of beverage cartons.

Our tool helps EXTR:ACT facilitate optimal collection and recycling systems for multi-materials in Europe. In order to ensure that beverage cartons are collected and recycled optimally we focus on five main pillars: collection, sorting, recycling of paper fibers, polyAL recycling and valorisation. By tracking material flows, we are able to makes sense of the logistics and interplay between these five pillars, resulting in a cheaper, more efficient and more resilient system. One step further towards a circular economy.

Here's how:

Data management

Beverage carton producers, like any other industry, compete with each other. For the circular challenge, however, they decided to team up. Yet sharing data in a competitive space can be very sensitive. EXTR:ACT solves this by independently managing the data. They are tasked with optimizing the beverage carton chain using sensitive business data from varying stakeholders from the industry — data which we use to aid their optimization!

Using EXTR:ACT data we optimize the logistics with only one winner in mind: the European nature. Custom optimization algorithms are tested and executed until a satisfactory solution is found.

We deliver actionable information to EXTR:ACT in digestible formats. Bespoke visualizations of multiple future scenarios for the collection and recycling streams of beverage cartons are created. This information is the basis for decisions that produce a broad impact across Europe.
